So my brothers gf recently had my handsome little sugar plum of a nephew. And she breast feeds (he’s only 2 months old) and I saw her starting to smoke her vape again??? Mind you this girl has always been glued to it prior to having my nephew. But damn I really didn’t think she’d be smoking it while she’s breast feeding. I’m not sure if it’s something that’s common??? I read that it’s terrible for the babies health. But “apparently” her nurse says it’s fine to smoke? I call bulls**t! Why’re we normalizing this…

Super bad for baby's health! Is there any way you could talk to your brother about her habit? There has to be a ton of alternatives to vaping that still satisfies that craving??? Eating tictacs simulates the movement of bringing the vape to your mouth. Eating minty things or adding mint to your water brings that flavor to your mouth and when you breathe in. There's all kinds of things!!
You can definitely be that source of help that she needs, I just hope she listens 🤍

my mom said she spoke to my brother about it but he said the same thing! “The nurses said she was fine to smoke” but I sent them BOTH an ad for a vape that’s no nicotine but has the same effect basically a placebo! Has great flavors and all that. They both just said “thanks!” Like hello�� once I see her smoke it again I’ll forsure bring it up. Just waiting for that open window

what nurse would say that though?? a quick Google search says otherwise... I get addiction being hard to kick but when it comes to your own baby's health that's just unbelievable???

exactly what I said. And my poor nephew already seems miserable all he does is cry and I read it makes babies irritable and gassy! Messes with their breathing too. I’m like please put two and two together. Yeah it’s awful I’m gonna try and talk to them today. She’s not all there in the head obviously

Ah that’s a hard one. Of course you’re concerned about your nephews health, anyone in their right mind would be but unfortunately the smoker has to *want* to quit. People can tell her til they’re blue in the face but she won’t make that change unless she wants to.
I’m honestly a little surprised if she quit during pregnancy and started back up again. Depending when she quit, a lot of the initial cravings would have subsided by now & she would have learned how to live her life without it … so part of me kinda thinks she was also smoking during pregnancy too but could be wrong.
I will say.. I asked my OB’s nurse a similar question and she mentioned for vapers who want to BF, it’s better to pump & not vape for 2 hours prior to pumping. So basically save the vape until after baby has enough milk to last for the next 2 feedings. But at 2 months I’m assuming she’s gonna be pumping frequently which would make things difficult if not being mindful of the timing of vape.

It’s a tricky one. Yes, it’s bad. But I mean, so are the methadone babies that breast feed ����♀️ so just for reference, I work with a methadone patient who is pregnant, and she’s planning to breast feed, her doctor is aware. The *thought* behind it is at least it’s a gradual taper off the methadone for the baby as the baby breast feeds less over the course of a few months. I know nicotine and methadone are different, but maybe there’s a bit more of a thought process behind it?

I’ll add, I’m just putting another view on it. Don’t come for me. �� if she’s vaping now, did she stop vaping during pregnancy, or did she just hide it better?

This is so hard because obviously you love your sweet little nephew and want him to be healthy, but truly it’s her decision and there’s not much you can do. I would directly state the facts once with evidence, but then drop it if she chooses to ignore you because otherwise you’re just going to push her and the baby away.

I haven’t yet brought it up to her but I’m waiting for my open window to bring up the seriousness of it. If I piss her off it’s bc of her guilt. She’s older than me too so that makes it more fun

My sister in law stopped while pregnant and started again right after delivery, I think maybe in the hospital even and nursed for a year. Her pediatrician said it was fine so she did. She knew she wasn’t addicted anymore but missed it (I don’t know, I don’t understand) I would have to say, you told her once, you told your brother, now it’s not up to you, hopefully her nurse is right and it’s fine for the baby
