What are the differences in facial features by gender? ›

Generally speaking, men have chiseled features and larger bones, while feminine faces tend to have softer, rounder contours. For example, the brow ridge is often softer or not present in women.

Masculine vs.

Female noses are generally shorter, narrower, and more concave in profile. Male faces tend to have flatter cheekbones, while women have rounder ones. Male lips tend to be thinner, and the distance between the nose base and the top lip is larger. Male foreheads tend to be higher, wider, and slope backward.

Size and body shape

On average, males have a larger waist in comparison to their hips (see waist–hip ratio) than females. In females, the index and ring fingers tend to be either more similar in size or their index finger is slightly longer than their ring finger, whereas male's ring finger tends to be longer.

Compared to women, men generally tend to have stronger foreheads, higher, broader, and more protruded due to the shape of their forehead frontal bone. A somewhat receding hairline could also express a more masculine face, causing the forehead to look even higher in men.

The square face shape is perceived as very masculine, with noticeably defined angles and width at all points. Most men do prefer to soften out this face shape to tone down the sturdy, intense feel of it.

Oval: Your face is often longer than wide, with the forehead standing out as the largest area of your face. According to Papanikolas, this form is typically regarded as the most attractive facial shape.

In Western cultures, the ideal of feminine appearance has traditionally included long, flowing hair, clear skin, a narrow waist, and little or no body hair or facial hair. In other cultures, however, some expectations are different. For example, in many parts of the world, underarm hair is not considered unfeminine.
