easy DIY burp cloths. - dress cori lynn (1)

I love a good easy diy sewing project, something I can make by hand without tons of mental energy… it’s just so relaxing. These little cotton gauze burp cloths are so easy to put together, only take a few minutes and make a great gift for a new mom. I love making gifts for people, especially for big life moments, because they’re even more meaningful, and double bonus on this one because these are super useful and make the best burp cloths. Super soft, and very absorbent.

All you need for this project is a few yards of double cotton gauze in whatever color you want, a sewing machine, a sewing tape measure or yardstick and scissors or a rotary cutter. I personally love using a rotary cutter for projects like this because it’s so quick. I also used my serger, but you don’t need a serger to do this project.

A quick aside: If you are at all into sewing I highly recommend adding a serger to your tool arsenal. It took me years to invest in one, and it literally changed my life. Plus they’re just fun to use… so fun. This is the serger I own and love.

Step 1: Cut out fabric

First up, you’re going to cut out two pieces (a front and back) of your fabric out into a rectangle. You can make these whatever size you want, but for these I cut them out 10 inches x 20 inches, which is a great size for a burp cloth.

Step 2: Stitch the pieces together

Next, you are going to stitch the two pieces together, leaving about 3 inches unstitched in one corner. There’s no front or back to this fabric so you don’t need to worry about inside or outside. (If you make these with a different type of fabric you’ll need to make sure you match up the two outsides.). I use my serger for this step which simultaneously stitches the fabric together and finishes the edges. (See image.)

Step 3: Turn out and close up.

After you’ve stitched the two sides together, using the open end, turn the fabric out, tuck in the unfinished edge and use your sewing machine to close up the open end. Make sure to stitch as close to the edge of the fabric as you can, so the stitch disappears. Wash the burp clothes to make them extra fluffy.
