It’s a common question that many new parents have: how often should I change my baby’s clothes in a day?

And the answer is: it depends.

Babies are notoriously messy, and you might need to change their outfits 2-4 times a day just because they spat and got their onesie dirty again. Factor in the outfit needed for their ‘outside’ time, and you’ll quickly come to learn you might need a few outfit changes throughout the day.

When Should I Change My Baby’s Clothes?

A good rule of thumb is that if the baby’s clothes get dirty because of food or because they spat or vomited, they need an outfit change. Poo-nami’s, poo explosions and nappy leaks can also happen, so be sure to check your baby’s clothes are not soiled and factor in extra clothes for the unknown accidents.

Also, check the weather and temperature to know if you might need a change of clothes for your baby. If they’re wearing short-sleeved onesies in the house, and you please on taking them for a stroll on a chillier day,to keep the baby warm, something with long sleeves might be in order.

How Many Baby Clothes Do I Need in Total?

Babies grow at a rather fast rate, so it can be difficult for parents to properly choose the right number of clothing their newborn needs.

Newborn sizes vary so make sure you check the weight guide and as well age guide when buying your baby new clothes. Usually newborn clothes come in size 0-3 months (size 000), 3-6 months (size 00) and size 6-12 months (size 0).

Here’s a minimum number of different baby items that might be useful:

  • 4-6 onesies
  • 4-6 baby sleeping attire, such as gowns, a sleeping bag
  • 3-4 clothes for cold seasons, such as warm pants, cardigans
  • 1 sun hat

You can read more about other items you will need when bringing your newborn home.

Factors that can influence the number of clothes you need for your baby

1. When they were born

Winter babies will need multiple thicker newborn clothing to keep them warm than summer babies, to keep the baby warm through the colder season.

2. The baby’s growth spur

The baby’s clothes can fit great one week, then be too small the next. Be sure to check the clothes fit properly, even if you ‘just’ bought them!

3. Your budget

Your newborn baby doesn't need 50+ onesies, so don’t deep dive into the "baby wear" section. It’s best to opt just for a handful of clothes that not only fit babies but are made from the right materials, such as natural fabrics, and offer UV ray protection.
