Do laundry sanitizers really work? ›

Regular washing with laundry detergent will remove some germs and bacteria, but to "sanitize" laundry means to use high temperatures or chemicals to kill 99.9 percent of germs, like OxiClean Laundry and Home Sanitizer, which also works as a great mold remover.

Hot water provides an effective means of destroying microorganisms. A temperature of at least 160°F (71°C) for a minimum of 25 minutes is commonly recommended for hot-water washing. Water of this temperature can be provided by steam jet or separate booster heater.

Hotel Laundry Uses Hot Water at 160°F

It's hotter than a washing machine at a laundromat can handle. It is washed at 160°F. When you wash your sheets and towels at home, take a page out of the hotel laundry playbook and use hot water. ‍For true sanitization and aggressive stain removal, hot water is the only way to go.

White vinegar has an ingredient known as acetic acid, which can kill viruses and bacteria so they can be easily washed away during the cleaning cycle. A half cup of white vinegar can act as a disinfectant and a deodorizer—removing those pesky germs and working to soften your fabrics.

Vinegar kills mold and fungi easily! Soak the items in a container with one cup of vinegar and enough water to fully cover and leave in soak for at least an hour. Then, wash it as normal in your washing machine.

Is Clorox or Lysol Laundry Sanitizer better? ›

There is less bacteria in the laundry after washing with the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer. It seems that the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer works better when it has more TIME with the laundry and possibly in the warmer water (since rinse cycles are usually cold). It still doesn't compare to chlorine bleach.

Borax is effective to kill germs, bacteria and other organisms. It is a disinfectant, biocide, insecticide, pesticide, herbicide and fungicide. Just one more reason to add it to a load of laundry. We know how tough tomato, mustard, grease and oil stains in clothing and towels can be.

Bath towels, sheets, and bedding –moist, warm, and protein-rich environments are a super-spreader locations for bacteria, so a splash of sanitiser should always be added to a wash of towels, sheets, and bedding. Socks and jocks – particularly if someone has a tendency towards tinea.

Hand sanitizers don't eliminate everything

Soap and water are far more effective at removing such common illness-causing germs as cryptosporidium, norovirus and Clostridium difficile. Soap also washes away bacteria as well as other viruses that are even tougher than coronaviruses.

The sanitize cycle is not as good as using chlorine bleach but it is probably good enough. They are not always this clean on the sanitize cycle, though. Here is a picture I already posted of a dish towel load done on the sanitize cycle with Kirkland detergent and 1 cup hydrogen peroxide.
