Red Dead Redemption 2 guide: Finding every type of berry (2024)

Completing Red Dead Redemption 2’s Challenges is a great way to earn some better gear — if you can figure out how to complete them. Some are surprisingly difficult to complete (we already wrote about how to collect three perfect rabbit pelts for Master Hunter Challenge Rank 2).

This guide will help you through Herbalist Challenge Rank 2: “Pick and eat four species of berry.” You see, there are only four species of berry in the game, so achieving this rank means finding all of them. Since actually looking for something in Red Dead Redemption 2 makes it seem like they disappear from the world entirely, we’re here to give you a hand.

Use Eagle Eye to look for bushes

Your Eagle Eye ability will highlight herbs and berries with a white particle cloud. The trick when using it to find berries is differentiating between a berry-bearing bush and just another shrub with some more Burdock Root under it.

Most of the harvestable plants stand out from their surroundings and are visually distinct with bright flowers, for example. That’s a little less true of the berries, so we’ll include an image of each plant in the galleries below.

The other thing to note here is that Arthur’s hand-drawn icons on the map for plants should be treated as ballparks rather than landmarks — they’re OK for a general area, but you’re just not going to find a plant right where he drew it.

The four species of berries

There are four species of berries in Red Dead Redemption 2: Blackberries, Evergreen Huckleberries, Raspberries and Wintergreen Berries. Each has its own distribution and favored environment, so it’s not a quick trip to taste them all.

Blackberries

Blackberries are the berry that we had the most trouble tracking down (for whatever reason). You’ll find them near rivers in the northwest part of the map — in West Elizabeth and Ambarino. We found this bush just northwest of Strawberry.

First, let’s get this out of the way: I’m your huckleberry.

Huckleberries are in the southeastern part of the map — in Lemoyne and parts of New Hanover. We had luck finding them in the swamps northwest of Saint Denis in the Bayou Nwa region.

Raspberries

According to your in-game Compendium, raspberries are in “most regions of America.” This is both good to know and useless for finding them. Look for them in open plains areas like Scarlett Meadows southeast of Rhodes.

Wintergreen Berries

Wintergreen berries are in the colder areas in the northern part of the map — mostly Ambarino and some of New Hanover. We found this bush to the north-northeast of Annesburg, behind Manito Glade (where you can find the Hermit Stranger).
