After using and washing washcloths over a period of time, they become stiff. How can you take out this stiffness and make them soft again? Too much detergent or fabric softener is the most common culprit. The more fabric softener used, the less absorbent the cloths will be, giving them that stiff feeling.
Using too much detergent will keep the washcloths from rinsing thoroughly and can also lead to stiffness.
To help remove the build-up, wash the washcloths in the washing machine using vinegar instead of laundry detergent. (Vinegar should be used in your washing machine only occasionally!) Do not overload the machine and follow by drying in the clothes dryer.
To help prevent this in the future, use the hottest water possible and the proper amount of detergent when washing the washcloths. When drying, do not use fabric softener with every washing.
