When To Start Putting Together Your Baby’s Nursery (1)

Congrats on your newest addition to the family, parents-to-be! While you might find it easier to do baby prep during your downtime, remember that there is a lot to do—involving more than picking a name and planning the baby shower. Take control of your timeline by finding out when to start putting together your baby’s nursery.

The Right Time To Start

Every parent’s idea of when to start building the nursery is different. Some start sooner, while others wait longer. However, it’s best not to wait until the last minute. Yes, your little one may stay in your room for the first few months of their life, but the’ll eventually move to their nursery once they start growing.

As such, the best time to start setting up your nursery is during the second trimester of pregnancy. You’ll feel more energized and motivated to get through most of your to-do list during this time. Many parents plan for the end of the trimester since this is also when they host the baby shower and receive some of the furniture they need. Once you actually have the furniture and items in the space, it becomes easier to put the nursery together.

How To Plan the Nursery

Planning the nursery is the first thing to do before decorating or building. The best strategy for prepping the baby’s room is to research nursery sets to help you decide what to buy now vs. later and what you need to create a functional bedroom.

Once you’ve picked out the furniture items, spend time outlining the bedroom and measuring the floors, walls, and ceilings. This will give you an idea of what furniture fits in the space and what doesn’t, helping you save money in the long run.

Things You Can Wait To Do Later

While it’s best to wait to do anything until the second trimester, there are projects you could postpone even longer. For instance, you can wait to hang shelving units until a later day, especially if you haven’t even bought hangers for your newborn’s clothes yet.

Other things you can wait to do include:

  • Painting the closet or walls
  • Putting up wall art
  • Choosing smaller furniture such as side tables

Last-Minute Touch-Ups and the Newborn Bag

You may discover that there are final touch-ups you want to complete before delivering your new baby. Although these tasks could wait, it’s best to get the touch-ups out of the way. In the eleventh hour, you can put up baby gates, install outlet covers, and mount shelves. Ensure whatever you do last minute doesn’t take up too much time.

Buying your baby's furniture is the first thing you want to do when deciding the best time to put together the baby’s nursery. Work with your partner to plan your projects and decide which projects to delay until later in the nine-month timeline for the nursery.

It all starts with a bedroom—the blank canvas is awaiting your personal touch to create the perfect nursery for your little one. Planning the nursery is fine, but I believe as I was taught…that it is better to order items you need but do not bring them into the home until the baby arrives home. Its not bad luck to set up the nursery beforehand but if some unexpected unfortunate event happens, the mother should not have to deal with seeing a completed nursery with no baby to fill it.
