What can a baby do at 24 weeks in the womb? ›

Your baby's brain is growing rapidly and their senses are continuing to develop. The tastebuds on their tongue are becoming more sensitive, their eyes respond to light and they can hear sounds from outside the uterus. Their lungs are developing too.

By the time you're 24 weeks pregnant, the baby has a chance of survival if they are born. Most babies born before this time cannot live because their lungs and other vital organs are not developed enough. The care that can now be given in baby (neonatal) units means more and more babies born early do survive.

Some babies born at 24 weeks survive without any obvious lifelong problems. Some babies born at 24 weeks who survive may have lifelong problems with: physical movement including walking, balance and coordination (cerebral palsy) • talking, thinking, learning, understanding and behaviour • hearing and/or seeing.

You're now 6 months or 24 weeks pregnant and your developing baby is showing just how strong their muscles have become by kicking and moving actively in the womb.

The babies moved their arms, heads and mouths more when their mothers touched their bellies than when their moms spoke to them. They also responded to maternal touch earlier in gestation than was previously known, between weeks 21 and 25 of pregnancy.

But there's plenty of room for them to move around, so they may be changing position quite a bit. They may even be in a transverse lie, meaning they are positioned horizontally across your uterus.
